{"id":44946,"date":"2016-06-29T11:07:51","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T03:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/japingkaaboriginalart.com\/?page_id=44946"},"modified":"2024-03-18T14:43:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T06:43:00","slug":"lesson-plans","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/japingkaaboriginalart.com\/education\/lesson-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal Art Lesson Plans for Visual Art Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h3 id=\"navtop\">Aboriginal Art Lesson Plans for Visual Art Teachers<\/h3>\n\n<h3>About This Project<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/japingkaaboriginalart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bush-Medicine-Lesson-Plan-1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/japingkaaboriginalart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bush-Medicine-Lesson-Plan-1.png\" alt=\"Bush Medicine Lesson Plan 1\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project was initiated by Japingka Gallery in 2015. \u00a0It is a response to approaches from teachers who were keen to explore Australian Indigenous art with their students.<\/p>\n<p>We believe that engaging an Indigenous Guide is the preferred way to explore culture. Knowledgeable community members are really the only people truly qualified\/authorised to teach their own culture. While having an Indigenous person in the room to give these lessons is optimal, practicalities and budget mean that for some schools it isn&#8217;t an option. These lesson plans are intended to assist in those instances, so that children can still be introduced to Aboriginal art.<\/p>\n<p>There are three Lesson Plans for primary school visual art teachers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bush Medicine<\/strong>: students reflect on and draw ideas from the artwork of Utopian artist, Rosemary Petyarre. Student activities explore the shapes, colours and appearance of leaves from local native trees, as well as colour mixing and mark making through painting and collage. This program has been inspired by conversations with artist Sarrita King. View <a href=\"https:\/\/japingkaaboriginalart.com\/education\/lesson-plans\/thinking-of-jimmy-pike\/\">Thinking of Jimmy Pike Lesson Plans<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Artist Permission<\/strong> &#8211; The artwork appears in the lessons with the permission of the artists and their representatives &#8211; <em>Medicine Leaf<\/em>\u00a0by Rosemary Petyarre and <em>Ancestors<\/em> by Sarrita King and <em>Thinking About Jimmy Pike<\/em> by Jimmy Pike.\u00a0 The artists maintain copyright over their artwork and representatives of the artists have given permission for the work to be used in this educational context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education &#8211; <\/strong>A link to these lesson plans is included in the Visual Arts Resource Guide as a reviewed and approved resource.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"curriculum\">Curriculum Overview<\/strong> &#8211; Bush Medicine and My Family have been developed for the Australian Curriculum Version 8 (Year 3 and 4), and also for the Western Australian Curriculum (Year 3 Syllabus), primary school visual arts curriculum. Relevant sections of My Family have been developed for the Australian Curriculum Version 8.3. Thinking About Jimmy Pike has been developed for Western Australian Curriculum (Year 1 Syllabus) and the Australian Curriculum Version 8.3. (Year 2)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class Room Tested<\/strong> &#8211; The material has been class room tested.\u00a0It can be\u00a0adapted to other\u00a0levels.
